The Case for Obama

Senator Obama has long fought for the civil and equal rights of minorities.  After college and law school Senator Obama set to work as a community organizer, registering low income communities to vote.  As an Illinois State Senator, Senator Obama’s advocacy on behalf of minorities extended to championing the equal rights of LGBT people when he became the chief co-sponsor of the Illinois Employment Non-Discrimination Bill which eventually became Illinois law.

As United States Senator, Obama established himself as an LGBT ally by becoming a co-sponsor and advocate of legislation important to the LGBT community, including his support for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, the Matthew Shepard Act, and the Equal Treatment of HIV Act.

As a presidential candidate, Senator Obama has continued his bold leadership on behalf of the LGBT community.  His agenda for America includes sweeping civil rights for the LGBT community. Here is how Senator Obama’s positions on LGBT issues break down issue by issue:

  • Supports ENDA (including protection based on gender identity)
  • Supports ending “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”
  • Supports the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act
  • Supports equal benefits for same-sex couples
  • Supports partner immigration rights
  • Supports full repeal of DOMA
  • Against anti-gay state constitutional amendments such as those in California, Florida and Arizona
  • Will appoint pro-LGBT judges like Justice Stevens and Ginsburg

These policy positions make Senator Obama the boldest and most LGBT inclusive major party nominee for President our nation has ever known.    As members of the LGBT community, we must do all we can to assure his victory come next November.  Through this blog, there are a variety of ways you can help Obama win.  These include:
